Heroes in Cork, begorra begorra… February 26, 2008

‘Heroes’ makes a hash of the Cork accent and every other Irish association in it.

‘Heroes’ is one of the better TV shows around at the moment. It’s not as good or thought-provoking as ‘Lost’ and the characters and dialogue are sometimes as wooden as Pinocchios head but hey, it has a regenerating cheerleader and a little Japanese guy who can twist space and time as he likes, so there’s plenty entertainment to be found. Series One wasn’t bad, and Series Two looked promising, especially when I heard that Peter Petrelli (he’s the guy who can absorb other people’s powers like a sponge) had landed in Cork, Ireland. Woo.

The excitement was short lived however. As soon as the first Irish character opened his mouth, I knew there was nothing but cringing in store for Irish viewers. And particularly for Cork viewers. What is it with these awful Irish accents that pop up so frequently in American movies and TV shows? Obviously, the ‘Heroes’ creators had done as little research as possible before putting together the Cork scenes. And if you thought one episode was all we had to endure, think again. It looks like Peter is staying put in Cork for a while; he even struck up a relationship with a Cork lass, so he did! For more Heroes ranting you can read one of The Stub’s earlier posts here.
