As some of ye will already know, for the past two or three years, the Cork Film Festival has brought with it the Kommando 24 Hour Film-Making Competition. As the title suggests, it dared all budding filmmakers to shoot and edit a 3-minute short film in 24 hours, which was then handed into the Kommando people (whoever they may be…I do know that they were associated with that short lived free Karnival magazine). You also had to base your short on a random word which you were given when you went to register. We (some friends and I) once received ‘Rhythm’ which wasn’t too bad in comparison to some of the other themes. It was an exhausting and at times rather unpleasant trial, particularly for the poor editor, but at least it resulted in a complete short film. This year, however, as pointed out by one of The Gifted Babies the Kommando competition is a no-show. What makes this so surprising is that the popularity of the comp was increasing with last years entries totalling 63. It was also an integral part of the fest as the winner received an award which was given to them at the Closing Gala. Hopefully the competition will return in some format in the future. For those who missed out, last year’s winner, Piebald is on show on youtube…or at least the ‘director’s cut’ version of it (it’s over 4 minutes instead of the required 3). Here you go:….
